Oceola Roundabout and The Lakes Emergency Egress Projects

Project Summary: The District is working to issue the contract for the construction of the Oceola Roundabout and Lakes Emergency Egress this week.

In the meantime, the District has contracted an arborist to start removing the trees required to enable the construction of the emergency egress. It is not ONLY dead and unsafe trees that will be removed; but the dead and unsafe trees that are in the area of the emergency egress route will be included in this project with consideration to safety and reducing fire fuels/wildfire mitigation.

A tree specialist is overseeing the tree removal to ensure the absolute minimum number of trees are removed. Any wood suitable for firewood will be cut into logs and left at the site shown on the map; and we will advise when it is safe for area residents to collect firewood later in February. The District is planning to replant trees to a ratio of 3:1 (three new trees to every one of the trees that are removed).

The tree removal work was scheduled to begin the week of February 18th and is scheduled to be complete within 2 weeks.

Most important safety notice: For everyone’s safety, we request that residents stay away from this area while the tree removal work is being done.

Alternative Exit from The Lakes

Project Summary: Engineering and Development services for The District of Lake Country are working together to determine how best to accomplish a second access route including intended function (emergency vs. open passageway). Important considerations include: proper design to avoid commuters short cutting through The Lakes as well as the cost ramification associated with building and maintaining new roadways. Design and Development of an emergency exit from The Lakes: $200,000

Safety at the Intersection of Oceola and Lakehill Drive

Project Summary: Numerous accidents (including two fatalities) have occurred at the intersection of Oceola and Lakehill Drive – primarily as a result of poor visibility, winter driving conditions and excess speed. Construction of traffic circle at the bottom of Lake Hill Drive and Oceola Road to cost: $1,250,000.

Many residents are happy that the DLC did not complete this project at roughly $300K more than the budget however many are not satisfied with an all or nothing approach. Less costly modifications could be completed including a 4way stop in interim. With that said, we are encouraging people to complete the following 'Report a Problem' form and encouraging them to pass along the link to others that may also want to submit a report on this issue.
